Beyond the pina - olada facade of Key West -- its Old Town, its
new resorts, its man-made beaches and twilight tennis -- lies a
strip in the center of the island as hardscrabble and innocuous as
the rest of the island is luxurious. Date palms, ferns and
bougainvillea overshadow the small clapboard houses, most of them
occupied by local Bahamians. Used car lots lurk alongside corner
stores, where men drink from paper bags on the stoop outside.
Occasionally, one will stumble into the street, whistling or
catcalling at passers-by. There are as many religious meeting
places on this road -- Pentecostal, Congregational, Jehovah's
Witnesses -- as video rental stores, and there are an ...
