Article: D.C. Police Still Aren't Up to Speed; New Cars Unequipped; Service Lags for Some

The first six new squad cars were delivered to the D.C. police department in June and rushed with fanfare to Southeast Washington, where officers had been patrolling with fewer than half their assigned cruisers. More new cars arrived throughout the summer, a total of 230 to replace battered and broken-down police vehicles across the city.

The new cars, bought with a federal grant and city funds, have helped to improve dramatically the police department's ability to respond to calls. And 175 more vehicles will arrive during the next three months.
