CAMBRIDGE - Robert Perkins was lost last summer in the
Arctic tundra hundreds of miles from the nearest civilization,
battling the waves of a sea- sized lake in his 16-foot canoe.
A solitary loon appeared from behind his right shoulder to
execute a wide, lazy U-turn before passing around the other
shoulder and disappearing over a horizon squeezed flat by the water
and sky. But Perkins paddled on, ignoring the loon and its message,
fighting fear and wind for another day before he, too, turned
around and desperately tried the other direction.
The about-face in a land where magnetic compasses are useless
