MIDVALE, Utah - Knute Rockne is alive, and he is not happy.
The other side has that big No. 74 trampling over his blockers like
orange cones on a highway. His boys are not firing out. He never
has had a team like this. They don't love it. The grassy field is
the bed they have made and they are sleeping in it.
The halftime whistle blows. They are losing, 13-0, and here
comes the coach. Here he comes: Rockne.
"I can line you up, I can tell you what to do, I can tell you
how to do it," he says, "but I can't make you do it."
