Baseball writers of America can walk tall this morning. Toronto
Blue Jays outfielder George Bell is the 1987 American League Most
Valuable Player.
Bell's narrow victory over Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell
means Jesse Jackson won't be firing any salvos from the campaign
trail. The American Civil Liberties Union, Judge Wapner and Geraldo
Rivera won't be summoned to expose and correct an injustice. Greta
Garbo, J.D. Salinger and Steve Carlton won't be asked to make
statements on behalf of people who don't make statements.
Over the 162-game season, Bell was clearly the best player
in the American League. But he's also a native of the Dominican
Republic who plays for a team in Canada and ...
