Record companies track the scent of success.
They sent scouts to Boston after the Cars surfaced from this
city's rock scene. They went to Minneapolis when native son Prince
was hot. They combed Athens, Ga., when R.E.M. first emerged. They
went to London when punk was the rage and to Australia when its
heavy metal bands made waves.
So where are the talent scouts looking now? To Ireland -- home
of U2, the most dominant act of 1987.
"The success of U2 has caused many companies to check out
what's happening in Ireland," says Epic Records spokeswoman Lisa
Markowitz.
A number of Irish bands have been signed to distribution deals
following U2's formidable year. These include In Tua Nua ...
