This is what happened when his presence merely was confirmed in
the press box. That's him? Gale Sayers? That's him. Gale Sayers.
Curt Gowdy stopped the first persons he saw to tell the story of
when he first beheld this man running with a football.
"Ohhh," said Gowdy in the Gowdyesque tone of exclamation.
"Jack Mitchell was at Kansas then . . . I broadcast Jack when he
played quarterback at Oklahoma . . . so I get down there on the
field just when they began to warm up and Jack takes me aside.
"You were just a junior then," Gowdy said, interrupting his
story to talk to the real thing next to him. "Jack says, 'I got a
kid here and I just can't believe him.' 'What do you mean?' I said. ...
