After the dreariest of starts with "The Bretts," "Masterpiece
Theater" gets back on track tomorrow night with a sparkling
one-part adaptation of Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" at 9 p.m.
on Channel 2.
Sparkling? Jane Austen? Yes, ye who have suffered through high
school travails of "Pride and Prejudice." And witty, suspenseful,
brisk and sexy, to boot. "Northanger" isn't in the first tier of
British TV adaptations of novels but is right at the top of the
second tier, along with "Bleak House" and "Silas Marner." "Abbey,"
in fact was produced and directed by the same team that brought
"Marner" to life last year -- Louis Marks and Giles Foster.
