US Rep. Chester Atkins, setting the stage for a possible run
for governor in 1990, is distancing himself from Senate President
William Bulger and acknowledging mistakes he made as one of
Bulger's top lieutenants.
Atkins, a Massachusetts Democrat who was chairman of the state
Senate Ways and Means Committee from 1978 to 1984, said he made
"serious mistakes" in pushing for a blood-donor bill for a crony of
state Democrats and in cutting the budget of the state's Housing
Court after the court's chief justice refused to hire an assistant
clerk who had been handpicked by Bulger.
