Rep. Chester G. Atkins' bid last week to reshape his
political image might have backfired, as Beacon Hill reacted with
fury to his apologies for mistakes in the state Senate and his
efforts to distance himself from Senate President William Bulger.
Sen. William Q. MacLean Jr. (D-Fairhaven), never one of
Atkins' friends, said the Democratic congressman's comments,
published last Sunday, showed him to be an opportunist. MacLean
said Atkins should forget about running for governor in 1990 and
hope that his next opponent in the 5th Congressional District is
not a strong one.
