NEW BEDFORD - A maritime alliance designed to bring
together the nation's maritime preservationists, its historians and
those concerned with America's maritime heritage has been formed
under the sponsorship of the National Maritime Historical Society.
Fittingly, said those interested in maritime history, the
93-year-old schooner Ernestina, based here and Massachusetts-owned,
was chosen as the alliance's birthplace last week.
The plans for the alliance were unveiled July 4 in Boston by
former Navy Secretary J. William Middendorf 2d, on board the USS
Constitution.
Meeting aboard the vessel, which once fished the Grand Banks
