The Whales of August" is at times a slight film, at times a
lovely one. But criticism of it is beside the point. The point is
that it allows Bette Davis and Lillian Gish to once again play off
their now-classic personas -- Davis tormented, neurotic, intense;
Gish pure, ladylike, delicate, enduring -- and as such it's a must
for anyone who loves movies. Although ...
