SEVILLE, Spain - World Chess Champion Garri Kasparov
retained his title yesterday with an astonishing, 64-move victory
in the 24th and final game over challenger Anatoly Karpov.
Experts described the contest between the two Soviet players
as the most dramatic finish in World Chess Championship match
history.
The 24-year-old Kasparov evened the score at 12-12, which
under tournament rules entitled him to keep the chess crown for
another three years.
When Karpov resigned after Kasparov's 64th move, the crowd in
the 700-seat Lope de Vega Theater stood and burst into applause.
For eight minutes, Kasparov and Karpov, 36, sat together at
the board and analyzed the game.
