After several days of meetings, phone conversations and
private mulling over his choices, President Clinton is nearing final
decisions on who will lead his national security team for a second
term, administration officials said yesterday.
There were clear indications yesterday that Clinton already
has reached at least tentative decisions about some top jobs. People
within the White House and at other agencies said it seemed all but
assured that White House national security adviser Anthony Lake will
move to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency and that his
current job will be filled by deputy national security adviser
Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger.
