NEW YORK - The newly designated New York City school
chancellor said yesterday that "public education is on trial" as he
prepared to attack the problems of the nation's largest school
system.
"It's a bigger question than New York City," said Richard R.
Green, now head of the 39,000-student Minneapolis school system.
"What is at stake today in America and in this city, and why this
voice must be heard, is whether or not we will educate other
people's children."
Green, 51, was selected unofficially Saturday by the Board of
Education to take over New York City's 960,000-pupil system. He is
to be hired officially when the board meets in a public session
tomorrow.
