LAS VEGAS - "Sports, Roxy."

It was halftime of last Saturday's Minnesota Vikings-San Francisco 49ers football game, and "Roxy" Roxborough was working the phones. Or was it the other way around? From all over Las Vegas the calls were coming in, five lines' worth, from eager bookmakers in hot pursuit of a cold fact: Roxborough's betting line on the second half of the game.

"Niners, 10 and 23 1/2 with no parlays," the 36-year-old oddsmaker would say quickly, then punch another button. As he worked, he watched a 13-inch, black-and-white television set that was stationed atop a pile of cardboard boxes on the other side of his cluttered, one-room office.
