When Al Haig was about 8 years old, he decided to prove to his
younger brother, Frank, that Santa Claus does not exist and that
their parents were the source of the gifts under the Christmas tree.
On Christmas Eve, the future four-star general persuaded his
brother to sneak down the hall of the family's suburban
Philadelphia home and spy on their parents in the living room.
"So that was the beginning of Al's career in covert
operations," Rev. Frank Haig recalls with a chuckle.
Alexander Meigs Haig Jr., one-time soldier, one-time secretary
of state, one-time White House chief of staff and now a Republican
presidential candidate, may not have had a career laden with covert
