Bob Dole has about as good a chance as anybody of being president
of the United States a year from now; and one of the reasons is his
campaign slogan.
"Bob Dole is," it says, "one of us."
Marvelous. Three little words. Like "I love you" but one
letter shorter. Suitable for inscription on buttons and bumper
stickers. Fits in a headline and on a TV screen and stands out on a
banner to be waved at airport receptions.
Not since Boston's Louise Day Hicks said "You know where I
stand" has a line of political discourse meant so much to so many
in so few words with such marvelous ambiguity. It is inclusive, or
