MEDEE, opera by Cherubini, presented by the Opera Company
of Boston in the Opera House Friday night.
"Medee" is one of Sarah Caldwell's strangest productions.
Ultimately it is a serious, honorable, and unnecessary failure. But
there are enough significant and beautiful things in it to make it
important to see and hear.
Caldwell's intention was to present the opera that Cherubini
wrote and that Beethoven and Schubert placed on the summit of
dramatic art. She opened many cuts, offering a significant amount
of music that has probably not been heard since 1791, and in doing
so, confirming that the composer knew his business - the familiar
cuts not only destroy the music's design but ...
