DES MOINES - The Des Moines Register upped the ante on its role
in the presidential selection process by endorsing candidates in
its Sunday edition for the first time in the history of the Iowa
caucuses.
Although the blessed candidates -- Republican Senate Leader
Bob Dole of Kansas and Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois -- were elated
by the unexpected endorsement, opinion was mixed as to how the
endorsements would affect the race.
As the largest circulation daily in the state and only
statewide the Register's news coverage has a large impact on those
who attend Iowa caucuses. Public opinion surveys consistently show
