The big question going into last night's Cardinal District girls basketball showdown between defending champion Gar-Field and leading challenger Hylton was how the Indians would fare without injured Emily Faught, the team's driving force.

The answer came from junior Shannon Segres, who scored 35 points to lead Gar-Field to a district-opening, 65-52 victory over the Bulldogs, a game Indians Coach Fred Milbert called "extremely tremendous."

During the final 2 minutes 30 seconds of the third quarter, Segres scored eight points in a crucial 10-0 run that transformed what had been a close game into a 47-36 Gar-Field lead. Later in the evening, the Hylton boys made sure it wasn't a sweep. ...
