Acid rain could be responsible for elevated death rates from cancer of the colon and other organs in the northeastern United States, according to two California researchers who will present their findings tomorrow in San Diego.

They say sulfur dioxide gas, a major component of acid rain, absorbs ultraviolet light that normally would fuel the body's production of Vitamin D. Without Vitamin D, people cannot absorb enough calcium to protect tissues from becoming cancerous, said Frank Garland, chief of occupational medicine at the Navy Health Research Center near San Diego.
