An agreement between a Wellesley company and the Soviet
government to place a US commercial payload into orbit aboard the
Soviet Mir space station could be "a real breakthrough" that could
pave the way for many more such joint ventures, several US space
program anaylsts and executives said yesterday.
The unprecedented agreement calls for a US-built device for
growing protein crystals to be taken aboard Mir, which is the only
functioning permanently manned space station in orbit. There,
Soviet cosmonauts will tend the self-contained package, operating
controls and making some observations. The device will then be
returned to the United States for detailed analysis.
