The idea of Super Tuesday was born on the morning of March 14,
1984, after primaries in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Walter
Mondale and Gary Hart were busy claiming victory, but Southern
politicians discovered something more ominous for them -- Jesse
Jackson had become a phenomenon.
In 1988, they vowed, Jackson would not enjoy a string of media
victories. They would package the primaries on one day and give
some respectable son of the late Confederacy a roaring start to the
White House -- Sam Nunn, Chuck Robb, even Dale Bumpers. Not only
did they want a Southern candidate who could win, they feared
Jackson.
