Article: SCULPTURE, DRAWINGS AND 'DIME STORE DECO'

A captivating show of Ellsworth Kelly's small sculpture at MIT's Bakalar Sculpture Gallery in the List Visual Arts Center, through March 27, reveals how organic energy galvanizes even the simplest of geometric shapes.

The 10 pieces on display are modest in scale, monumental in impact. The varied materials include honeycombed aluminum, walnut, stainless steel, painted aluminum and USS COR-TEN steel. The works often depend on subtle weights and balances such as a 1978 equilateral triangle with two of the corners cropped. Instead of the angular tensions of the three sides, the object takes on an expansive character, balanced on one of the corners like a dancer executing a turn.
