YURI BASHMET, viola, with MIKHAIL MOUNTIAN, piano -- In a
recital in Jordan Hall last night.
Last month the president of the Moscow Conservatory described the
violist Yuri Bashmet as a "genius player." Last night Bashmet
made his American debut in a preview concert for the
Soviet-American festival of "Making Music Together," and there's no
question that he is a genius. He may not have put his best foot
forward in the first half of his concert, but even then it was
already apparent that the Ukrainian violist, still in his early
30s, belongs to the history of his instrument; he has extended and
redefined its possibilities. Like Richter or Rostropovich or Annie
Fischer or Joan ...
