Article: MARATHON'S MAN: SEMPLE

The sweatbox was straight from an old movie, probably an old movie that featured three men named Moe and Larry and Curly. The customer would open the front of the sweatbox and sit inside. The door would be locked behind him. The customer's head could be seen above this . . . this appliance. Just the head. Nothing more. The customer would look as if he were going to a costume ball as a human washing machine.

A bran muffin would be at his naked feet in the box. A bran muffin or a 2-day-old cheese sandwich.

"Jock, there's a bran muffin in here," the customer would say. "Jock, there's a 2-day-old cheese sandwich in here."

"It's my lunch," Jock Semple would reply. "I'm keeping it warm."
