Article: SIMON'S US MATCHING FUNDS DEPEND ON OUTCOME OF ILLINOIS PRIMARY

WASHINGTON - Sen. Paul Simon is counting on a strong showing in his home state of Illinois next Tuesday to restore his eligibility for federal matching funds before a cutoff is triggered, a campaign spokesman said yesterday.

Simon became ineligible for matching funds by winning less than 10 percent of the vote in two successive primaries, but election law stays the cutoff for 30 days.

The matching funds can continue to flow during the 30 days, and eligibility is restored when a candidate receives at least 20 percent of the vote in another state primary.
