When Tom O'Neill heard about the place with the used furniture,
he made sure he got over there before his wife, Mary Grassa O'Neill.
As husband and wife, the O'Neills seem to get along nicely
after 13 years of marriage. That's at home in Milton. But when they
get to their jobs as Boston middle-school principals, it's every
O'Neill for himself/herself.
Tom, as principal of the Lewenberg in Mattapan, and Mary, as
principal of the Timilty in Roxbury, compete good-naturedly for
supplies, contest prizes, whatever. To note that resources are
limited for urban schools is to understate the obvious.
"You have to hustle, scratch and claw," Tom O'Neill says.
