Two superb actors, Kirk Douglas and Jason Robards, star together
for the first time in "Inherit the Wind," a new two-hour version of
a classic American drama, airing from 9 to 11 tonight on Channels 4
and 10.
The drama is inspired by the famous Scopes "monkey trial" in
1925 in Dayton, Tenn., in which a teacher was prosecuted for
teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Clarence Darrow, the famous
Chicago attorney, defended the teacher, J.T. Scopes, who was
prosecuted by William Jennings Bryan, the orator, religious
fundamentalist and former presidential candidate.
H.L. Mencken, the critic and journalist, covered and
memorialized the trial for the Baltimore Sun.
