When he won at home in Illinois on Tuesday, his first triumph in
two-dozen contests, Sen. Paul Simon likened his rebirth to that of
Antaeus, a figure from Greek mythology who regained strength when
he touched the earth. Author of 11 books, Simon can fairly claim to
be the top writer in the field. But if he checks his Larousse
Encyclopedia of Mythology, he'll find Antaeus was (a) a Libyan
giant; (b) "a monstrous bandit who forced all travelers to wrestle
with him"; and (c) ultimately croaked by a Greek named Hercules.
