Someday there may be a need to send US troops to Nicaragua. A
regime getting a billion dollars in annual aid from Moscow may
shelter Soviet strategic weapons or may launch a full-scale
invasion of another country to spread the Sandinista gospel.
Ortega and Reagan offer matching paranoia. One has regularly
been predicting another US invasion (like previous ones). The other
has spun tales of Bolshevik hordes prancing through the streets of
Harlingen, Texas.
Once again, reckless spin control runs US policy. An
administration of photo opportunities must top bad news (the
North-Poindexter indictments) with a war scare or even a splendid
