LEEDS, England - In July 1978, when high-ranking officials from
the United States, Egypt and Israel needed an absolutely secure
setting for the first, crucial conversations of the Arab-Israeli
peace talks, they chose Leeds Castle. What building, after all,
could be more impregnable than a sturdy medieval castle built on
two islands and surrounded by a lake that acts as a natural moat?
And Leeds was accustomed to receiving the famous and powerful:
Eleanor of Castile and Henry VIII are numbered among its royal
owners. The castle's accommodating staff is accustomed to catering
to the needs of important people, although setting up a kosher
kitchen for Moshe Dayan at the '78 talks was, ...
