Like it or not, the 1988 America's Cup season is under way.
Ceremonially at least, and on the water, too. The giant
super-yacht, New Zealand, launched for trials last Thursday in
Auckland, was officially launched today before 2,000 VIPs from
throughout the world.
If nothing else, curiosity must have drawn a good many.
Nothing even close to the New Zealand has ever been seen before
other than on a designer's doodling pad.
She is a white, 130-foot (approximately) monohull with a
slightly curved matchstick mast of about 160 feet, on which is
pressed four times the sail area of a 12-meter. She has two wide
wings extruding from her gunwales, giving her decidedly a Star Wars
