AUGUSTA, Ga. - I had been hesitant about it for years. Almost
tentative. I wanted to do it so much, but I wasn't sure if I
should. I was in love, but I didn't want her to say no . . . there
would always be hope as long as I didn't hear the "no."
Yesterday I finally screwed up all my gumption and all my
courage and gave it a go. I tried to join Augusta National Golf
Club.
Lord knows I had prepared for this moment. I had enrolled for
the last three years in a correspondence school course, "Advanced
Horticulture: Know Your Flora From Your Fauna," and indeed I now
knew the difference between an azalea and a magnolia and a Carolina
cherry tree.
