Article: CONSERVATIONISTS FEAR N.H. WOODS COULD SLIP INTO DEVELOPERS' GRASP

CONCORD, N.H. - A 68,000-acre tract of New Hampshire woodlands may be sold before conservationists and politicians can figure out a way to preserve it from development, US Rep. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) said last week.

But Gregg, joined by Sen. Gordon J. Humphrey (R-N.H.) and other conservationists, argued that preservation plans should be pursued because vast tracts of timberland in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont may come up for sale in the next decade.

Perry R. Hagenstein, a Wayland, Mass., forestry consultant, said as much as 10 million acres, or 40 percent of the forest area of New Hampshire and Vermont and 70 percent of Maine's, may come on the market by the year 2000.
