A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St.
Augustine's Church, South Boston, for Francis R. (Franna) Burke of
South Boston, administrative assistant to Senate President William
Bulger.
Mr. Burke died Thursday in Milton Hospital after a long
illness. He was 80.
A lifelong resident of South Boston, Mr. Burke was regarded by
many as the unofficial mayor of Andrew Square and was known for his
dedication to the community. He had been an administrative
assistant to Senate presidents for the past 28 years, serving under
Bulger since 1978.
A graduate of South Boston High School, Mr. Burke first worked
as a machinist at a small shop on A Street. He soon became the
