Article: POPE CALLS FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM TO MARK ANNIVERSARY IN UKRAINE

VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II yesterday called for religious freedom for Ukrainian Catholics in a letter marking the 1,000th anniversary of Christianity in what is now the Soviet Union.

"No one ought to consider membership in the Catholic Church as incompatible with the good of the homeland and with the heritage of Saint Vladmir," the pope said in a letter to Ukrainian Catholics throughout the world.

Prince Vladimir introduced Christianity in Kievan Rus', the ancient name of the Soviet Ukraine, with a mass baptism in 988 on the banks of the Dnieper River.
