A Flynn administration proposal to set up zoning districts
devoted to light manufacturing would help preserve blue-collar
jobs. To defuse opposition from real estate interests, the
administration should emphasize that the proposal is part of a
package designed to encourage manufacturing in Boston.
The zoning plan, presented to the Boston Redevelopment
Authority last week, ran into a barrage of opposition from property
owners; some manufacturers even said the proposal would harm their
businesses. The Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce supported the
concept, but called the proposal as written "a negative
intervention by government."
