CHICAGO - Red Sox coach Al Bumbry finishes a 10-minute
dissertation on the merits of prize pupil Ellis Burks, then smiles
and says, "He can be what he wants to be. No doubt about it."
Ellis Burks is The Man. Much has been made of Mike
Greenwell's sweet swing, Todd Benzinger's versatility and Brady
Anderson's promise, but when teams tempt Lou Gorman with lefthanded
pitching, Burks is tops on the Most Wanted list.
He can be what he wants to be. Burks is the whole package:
power, speed, arm and instincts. He also is only 23, which makes
him the youngest of Boston's baby bull outfielders.
Sox fans don't know much about Burks. He was recalled from
Pawtucket one year ago today and ...
