A. The Old Howard itself made a fiery exit from the Boston scene
in 1961, when it burned nearly to the ground. However, the strip
joint had been empty since 1954, when Suffolk County district
attorney Garrett Byrne decreed that the nearly nude terpsichores on
the stage were putting somewhat more emphasis on obscenity than on
art. The four-story building was constructed in 1843 as a church by
the followers of William Miller, a Vermont preacher who had
