'll be honest. There are definite drawbacks to luxury
cruises -- chief among them that the ship waits for no one.
Capt. Jakob Lothe of the Royal Viking Sky has no idea how many
times he almost pulled out of port without me.
The most frustrating part of our 17-day Rio de Janiero-to-Fort
Lauderdale trip -- all 5,004 nautical miles (5,755 statute miles)
of it -- began on the 10th day when we docked at Bridgetown in
Barbados, the easternmost island of the West Indies.
It was high noon on Easter Sunday and the town was literally
locked up. Aside from the taxis waiting to pick up those of us who
wanted to explore the island, there was no traffic; few people were
