The federal government remains solidly committed to the
dream of an artificial heart, and is confident a recent shift in
tactics can make it come true sooner, a National Institutes of
Health official said yesterday.
That endorsement followed widespread reports Thursday that
after 24 years of support, the NIH was abandoning the artificial
heart. The only five human recipients of the heart have died.
"Everybody concluded we were going to stop the whole program, but
that's as far from the truth as you can get," Dr. Eugene Passamani,
director of NIH heart disease programs, said in an interview.
Research funds slated for the total artificial heart will go
instead to a device to replace ...
