FULLERTON, Calif. - Vice President George Bush asserted
yesterday that Gov. Michael S. Dukakis of Massachusetts holds
national security views that are "naive at best" and would endanger
the national defense if implemented.
Citing the governor's opposition to a number of strategic
weapons, including the MX and Midgetman missile systems, Bush said
Dukakis' views are "more the thinking of George McGovern, not Harry
Truman. Even Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale supported systems that
Gov. Dukakis opposes."
It was Bush's most direct and strident attack on his likely
Democratic opponent, and signaled a major tenet of his general
election strategy: to portray Dukakis as too liberal and too ...
