Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, in New Hampshire yesterday to
speak at the 150th commencement of Colby-Sawyer College, defended
the mass mailing of AIDS education pamphlets after criticism by
Sen. Gordon Humphrey (R-N.H.)
Koop, responsible for the distribution to 107 million
households in the nation, responded to Humphrey's statement on
Friday that people who lead "moral lives" need not be concerned
about the epidemic. Koop said Humphrey's assumptionwas "dead wrong."
"If all the world were like Gordon Humphrey claims he is, then
we wouldn't have to worry about AIDS at all, would we?" Koop said
