To go by the candidates, you'd think environmentalism barely
existed.
Oh sure, just last week Gov. Michael Dukakis was over at the
Boston Fish Pier urging a moratorium on offshore drilling. And yes,
Vice President George Bush embarked on a fishing trip along
Oregon's Rogue River -- netting considerable publicity but no fish.
But still, this is a campaign almost bereft of dialogue on the
environment. Bush scored a D+ and Dukakis a B on the League of
Conservation Voters' report cards. And neither candidate has moved
beyond jobs to discuss what to do about toxic wastes, acid rain or
the pollution of harbors -- perhaps because environmental topics
can contradict the supreme political ...
