Article: LABOR PARTY TURNS TO NEW CANDIDATES FOR ISRAELI ELECTION

JERUSALEM - Israel's centrist Labor Party surprised even itself this week by bringing fresh faces into its leadership as a crucial national election campaign nears.

Labor's mammoth central committee used secret ballots Thursday night to add 29 candidates to the party's Knesset list for Nov. 1 parliamentary elections. It was the first time since the party's formation in 1930 that names on the list were chosen by election rather than by a tiny cabal of leaders.

In Israel, parties field lists of candidates for the Knesset, and voters cast their ballots for each list.
