Although Gov. MichaelDukakis is drawing steadily away from Jesse
Jackson in the number of electoral delegates, he would be wise to
reach out and embrace Jackson, who is distancing himself from
Dukakis and the Democratic leadership.
It is a gesture Dukakis must make if he is to garner the
black support he is likely to need in the general election.
"As much as some may regret it," said Linda Williams, a
political analyst, "Dukakis will need Jesse Jackson." And that is
the reality with which Dukakis, and the party leadership, must come
to terms.
Despite the views of some supporters, Dukakis will need a
large black-voter turnout in a close race with George Bush, and
