Kendall Hailey made her first solemn vow at 15: to be an
autodidact -- a self-taught person. The day she received a summer
reading list from her school in North Hollywood, she says, she
decided to manage her own education.
"Mandatory," is her least favorite word, she says, "and being
told what to read during the summer suddenly made me realize that
I don't really like being told what to read during the fall, winter
and spring, either."
Hailey wrote a book about her education and titled it "The Day
I Became an Autodidact, and the Advice, Adventures and Acrimonies
that Befell Me Thereafter." She was in Boston recently to tout the
