STOCKHOLM - The deadly AIDS virus has penetrated the
general US population at a level that is significantly higher than
studies of military recruits have suggested, bolstering estimates
that at least 1 million Americans are now infected, a leading US
researcher announced yesterday.
Dr. James Curran, director of the AIDS program at the
federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, told the Fourth
International Conference on AIDS that results emerging from a
survey of four "sentinel" hospitals across the US show that about
three of every 1,000 patients hospitalized for reasons unconnected
with AIDS harbor the virus.
